TGIM – Forced To Resign…Or Get Fired!

I give praise to God for His perfect plan, for His blessings and favor in my life and moire importantly, for His love, grace and mercy on me, a sinner.

Something happened last week which I felt the need to share with you involving Calvary Chapel, both the Fort Lauderdale and the St.Petersburg mega churches. Not surprisingly, both stories stem from deeply flawed pastoral leadership.

Firstly, Pastor Bob Coy, the founder & 30 year leader of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale was asked to step down from his leadership role, and completely erased from the Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale web site following reports of extra-marital affairs and a compulsive pornography habit.

Secondly, On April 10th, Scott Rodriguez, one of my former pastors from Calvary Chapel St.Petersburg, an unwavering, passionate, somewhat controversial preacher of the gospel was forced to resign his position as associate-pastor after he exposed sexually immoral behavior and alcohol abuse among the pastoral leadership at Calvary Chapel St.Pete, a non-profit business where I served as a Sunday school teacher, web designer and graphic artist for over 5 years from 2005 through 2011.

Elizabeth and I were both devastated to read Scott’s letter which followed his dismissal meeting with Calvary Chapel St Pete church leadership.

Fact is, nearly a dozen churches in the past couple years lost a pastor due to a moral issues, says Ron Edmondson, a Lexington, Kentucky pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church and religious affairs consultant. Sadly, the word “epidemic” was recently used to describe the number of pastors who are leaving the ministry because of moral failures.

Now, I understand this has nothing to do with internet marketing, however it has everything to do with the great commission, the mission for each believer to advance the gospel to the four corners of the earth, and do so in the footsteps of an unwavering Christ.

Truth of the matter is, you don’t need a mega church to advance the gospel and further God’s kingdom. All you need is faith in the risen Christ, the desire to serve, and a bible. Like the apostle Paul, I believe very strongly true ministers of the truth should work to support their ministry rather than be supported by their works in ministry.
