Throwback Friday, Remember Floppy Disks?

Floppy-Disks

Another early start to a splendid Friday in the sunshine state, praise God! Today, long before the sun was up I was busy doing some much needed rearranging in my home office where I came across a box full of 3.5 inch, 1.44Mb floppy disks. Remember those? Talk about a throwback!

What’s funny about these near obsolete storage devices is that I used one not so long ago when I needed to transfer a small file onto a laptop that didn’t have a USB port for a thumb drive, nor wireless network capabilities. Don’t ask why I’m still using such an old laptop, just be amused I actually used a floppy at all in 2016!

It blows my mind that less than 15 years ago these 1.44Mb diskettes were standard issue. Nowadays, data is transferred either wirelessly or through flash drives which are often at least 1,000 times more powerful than these floppies were way back when. My iPhone for example has 32 gigabytes of disk space, about 28,000 diskettes’ worth!!!

I for one am sure thankful floppy days are over, although I have to admit holding one in my hand this morning felt somewhat nostalgic. Some of my earlier work, such as the “Peur & Frissons” web site (1995) is sitting on one of them three and a half’er; it’s doubtful that web site’s even going to be live again…
